Do individuals, groups, or communities need to participate in technological and scientific advances in order to be considered "civilized"? Do traditions that go back hundreds and sometimes thousands of years need scientific "proof" in order to have merit and value? If our scientific and technological developments end up resulting in the destruction of our habitats, food and resource sources, or, worse, in the total annihilation of our species does that mean that we have done a better job at being civilized--that our civilization has been better than or superior to those that came before us?
